The Berchtesgadener Land has many picturesque corners, but for most guests it is the most beautiful place and the ideal starting point for a holiday Schönau am Königssee. Here, majestic mountains meet the world-famous, emerald-green lake.
If you want to live in a central yet idyllic location, the Stoll's Hotel Alpina in Schönau the perfect choice. From here, you can easily reach not only Königssee in just a few minutes, but also the neighbouring town of Berchtesgaden with its historic streets and sights.
The health resort with a therapeutic climate Schönau am Königssee is situated at a picturesque altitude of around 630 metres, right on the edge of Berchtesgaden National Park. Schönau and Berchtesgaden merge almost seamlessly; the centre of Berchtesgaden is only about 3 to 5 kilometres away and can be reached in just a few minutes by car.
Travelling by car: Take the A8 motorway (Munich-Salzburg), exit at Bad Reichenhall, and then the B20 directly into Berchtesgadener Land.
Travelling by train: To Berchtesgaden main station, from there buses or taxis will take you to Schönau in a few minutes.

The skyline of the Berchtesgadener Land is characterised by the imposing Berchtesgaden Alps. The highest and most famous mountain is the Watzmann with its striking main peak at 2,713 metres. Other well-known peaks that frame the valley are the Jenner (the ideal viewing mountain), the Hochkalter and the legendary Untersberg.
If you want to experience Bavarian tradition up close, you should visit the Alpine pasture drive arrive. When the cows return to the valley festively decorated (with so-called „Fuikl“) after the summer on the mountain pastures, this is celebrated extensively. Depending on the weather, this usually takes place between the end of September and the beginning of October.

The Königssee is undisputedly the most beautiful lake in the region, followed by the wild and romantic Hintersee in Ramsau. Both lakes are fed by cold mountain water and are therefore usually too fresh for extensive swimming.
Lakes & swimming: For a refreshing swim in the summer, we recommend the Aschauerweiher natural swimming pool, Lake Thum near Bad Reichenhall or – even more conveniently – the heated Outdoor pool right here at Stoll’s Hotel Alpina.
Cycling: The Berchtesgadener Land is a paradise for cyclists! Whether leisurely family tours in the valley, extensive e-bike routes to the mountain pastures or challenging mountain bike trails - the well-developed network of trails offers something for everyone.
The emerald-green Königssee with its steep cliffs is reminiscent of a Norwegian fjord and harbours some exciting superlatives:
Depth: At its deepest point, the Königssee is a remarkable 192 metres deep.
Swimming: Swimming is permitted at designated shore areas (such as the Malerwinkel). However, as the lake is fed by mountain water, it is very refreshing even in high summer and rarely exceeds 20°C. (Tip: If you like it warmer, simply relax in the heated indoor or outdoor pool at Stoll's Hotel Alpina after your lake excursion).
Shipping: The journey with the silent electric boats takes around 35 minutes to the St. Bartholomä peninsula. The journey to the Salet terminus (Obersee) takes just under 55 minutes (one way).
A boat trip on the emerald-green Königssee is one of the absolute highlights of the region. The trips are organised by Bayerische Seenschifffahrt all year round (except in icy conditions) using silent electric boats.
Procedure: The boats depart from the lakeside landing stage in Schönau. You can either buy tickets online in advance (highly recommended in high season!) or directly at the ticket counter.
Stops: Halfway along the route, the boat stops at the world-famous pilgrimage church St Bartholomä. From mid-April to mid-October, the boats continue to the terminus Salet (starting point for the Obersee).
Highlight: During the trip, you can listen to the famous Königssee echo, which is demonstrated by the captain with a trumpet or flugelhorn.
